Gloria Inzunza-Franco -- an immigrant from Mexico and an English Learner herself in the public school system at a time when bilingual education was not available., Gloria writes: "I faced many difficult challenges in schools that without family support, I would have not been able to overcome them. I can honestly say that the family (parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.) support and encouragement I received at home contributed significantly to my educational success and made an important difference in my education experience.”

Gloria has ten years of experience working to promote collaboration and partnership between immigrant families and schools at both the school district and the university levels in her position as a School-Home-Community Collaboration Training Specialist with the Center for Language Minority Education and Research. The focus of CLMER's work in this area is to facilitate collaboration among immigrant parents, teachers, administrators, and community to create opportunities for all students to reach their highest potential. We believe that parents are their children's primary teachers and supporter and will actively engage in their children's educational process when schools and institutions learn to collaborate with immigrant parents in ways that are culturally responsive. Currently Ms. Inzunza-Franco is on the steering committee of the National Coalition of Education Activists (NCEA) and serves as a parent advocate at the national level. Her experience also includes presenting at such conferences as: California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), Jornada Pedagogica Internacional, and the National Coalition of Education Activists (NCEA). Further, Ms. Inzunza-Franco participates in various community efforts to demystify the educational process and assist parents and students in planning for college.
