2) ESL STANDARDS- Question, Answer and Resources

ESL STANDARDS talks about the background on, and examples of, current trends in the development of formal curriculum standards for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and students studying English as a second languages (ESL). The handbook addresses questions, issues, and concerns of those considering developing standards. It begins by addressing popular notions, and misconceptions about standards generally. Next, it provides background on standards for English language arts as they are being developed for all students, and it explains why additional ESL standards are needed. The handbook also identifies useful model standards that are available, including newly developed national styandards for teaching english as a second language. It identifies potential areas of focus in language development for which standards may be developed, but it also identifies some potential difficulties that can result when the formal curriculum is overly prescribed and other factors are ignored. The handbook offers a case example of ESL standards development at a school district level that is serving large numbers of ESOL students. Lastly, it includes a comprehensive bibliography on second language curriculum and instruction that is of general relevance to ESL standard development, and an appendix on additional factors to consider in the attempt to provide equitable educational opportunities for ESOL students.
