Leadership and Community Action

Do you want to realize your full potential as a peer leader in your community, university and future career?

The 3-unit course, Leadership and Community Action, offers intensive leadership training in conjunction with either volunteer or work study community service. The course provides personal leadership development and guidance in discovering your own personal passion through community service. 

Students will work in community nonprofit organizations for 60 hours during the semester mentoring and tutoring at risk youth.  Students will enhance their own development as community leaders while learning ways of engaging in social transformation. 

  1. Receive valuable community service experience!
  2. Boost leadership abilities for future careers!
  3. Serve as a role model for youth in the community!
  4. Work with energetic and committed professionals dedicated to providing assistance to bilingual, non-English speaking and minority youth in the greater Long Beach community!

Open to students seeking volunteer experience and/or who currently are working in schools under a CLMER or BLAST job placement.  Recommended for students who desire to work in the fields of education, social work, consumer science, business, recreation, political science, or other areas of community leadership.

This course is developed through a collaboration of the Center for Language Minority Education & Research (CLMER), the Center for Community Engagement (CCE), and community partner Long Beach Better Learning After School Today (BLAST).
